So you're the new coach. Ok, now what?
Coaching a team that seemed a good idea, maybe even easy ... until you started to think and go deep. All of these players, parents, design, practices ... and decisions that game ... ugh.
Maybe coaching third base could not be easier ...
What do you think?
SOLUTIONS:
Rule # 1 - Relax, it will work!
It will probably prove to be good.
How do I know? Because I think this?
Well, first time in search of information. Websites like ours with articles like these are sure signs of having at least try, instead of sitting on your hands, bowing your head and your confidence Little League experience for a long time ago. And why ...
Rule # 2 - will be organized ...
And yes, you will have time to do it. As a matter of fact, there is an article that I strongly urge you to read. E 'on how to organize your team and yourself and is titled, "PlanIn order to succeed. "
Please finish this article before jumping there (I link at the end of this article).
Rule # 3 - You'll have fun!
Look, the more fun you have, the more fun your kids will ... and yes, the opposite is true.
I personally think that some of the best things about youth baseball are the adults! I also think that some of the worst things about youth baseball. I mean this because we, as the age ... we tend to forget howHave fun and play games. Life does just that for us. Here we try to field problems on a baseball, as we do at work ... Ugh!
We get close, our children play close. We say bad things on the bench ... well, you get the picture ...
Let's go (This lesson hits the mark or not).
A final thought (by someone who had the privilege of baseball for 350 days a year) ...
It's Just Baseball! Baseball is a game!
(Thehappens to be the best game ever!)
Rule # 4 - You are here for every player!
If you're in this game for a reason other than those guys ... Each ...
Now go away! (This was paraphrased and stolen from a speech given by a friend, Gordie Gillespie, the winningest coach in the history of college baseball: He is absolutely correct!)
You get more joy with that attitude than you can imagine!
Any player who does not share your last name is notentertainment and support you and your son! (You've probably seen it happen).
Coaching your child is really a trick.
I hope you like it (though it may test your mettle). But I can assure you that embracing an entire team of guys can give you an idea of how a good coach and a person who could be or could be!
Personally, I can tell you that the first influences of my youth coaches indelible mark on me ... This is how important you are.
Rule# 5 - Winning is important ... Not quite everything.
I decided something many years ago.
Take this for what it's worth ...
Nearly 10 years have an understanding of the concept of winning!
Half of the 11-year olds have an understanding of the concept of winning!
Almost all children under 12, have an understanding of the concept of winning!
Any? All of them? No, I do not think all the players on some hot team of 9 years the country compete for the many "World Series" tour out there(How many worlds are there anyway).
These teams and families have a way of life. It 'a language spoken at the table. They are probably more the exception than the rule though.
Only a strong grasp of the competitive nature of the league and your team.
Rule # 6 - It will be the tedium of police.
Looking for a good way to turn a great baseball player in a football player? (God forbid) ... Bore him!
A young boy begins hisday by opening his eyes with an initial idea of ... "Hey, I just got today!"
And we dare to bore? Remember my comments about how we tend to want to solve the problems in baseball as we do in office?
They are the children. It 's a game ... and the games are fun ...
It 's fun or find a game that is fun!
Rule # 7 - Getting help from other parents.
Women have the right ... Men do not ask for directions. We have all the answers ... Rocksteady and blah, blah have!
Personally,I've never had a coach came to me after a game and ask me something about how and why I have a situation the way I played! I mean NEVER!
WHY '? Because this is baseball ... and we are boys. We played Little League (20 to 30 years ago). Let's look at TV Pro Baseball ... ugh. What a bad idea to try to learn from a group of children in the same way the greatest players in the game.
So do not ask ... Tips and our children.
SOLUTIONS:
Reachedinformation, such as reading articles like this and find videos, books, etc. (did you check out our video and book library ?)...
Why not adopt and embrace some of the parents.
Parents have a single meeting for 10 minutes after your first session.
Let them know who you are and as the season in mind (in general).
A team mom is worth its weight in the dozen roses you'd better buy them at the end of the season.
Record of the father (s), it is hopedplural, which are found around the wall during practice. Many really want you to ask for their help. They do not want Horn so that it is up to you to ask, why not do it!
Some parents are better served if the book keeper to score instead of your BP (practical joke) pitcher.
Another may be the most comfortable helps you set the canoe and raking and lining the field for games.
Others really want to be on the pitch or hit fungoes infield.
The bottom line is thatI believe that adults play better when they were working together ... and as a byproduct, you will be all the richer for the relationship actually developing with new friends.
WARNING: There is a line I recommend ...
You're the coach, are the parents of the team.
A boy has the final say so. You, the coach!
This is an area of lobbying, disputes are handled away from children and the actions and decisions of management (you) are final. There are no politics, just honestdecisions made by you ... the coach!
Note: Baseball is the greatest game in the world to guess!
One last important tip for communication:
Get all the email addresses of your parents and use them for two things:
Communicate - Communicate - Communicate. Not necessarily long, just frequent.
Join all your parents drive (and maybe the players, if a bit 'bigger) to our Baseball Tips Newsletter. This is a read speed of 2 timesMon We do not rent or sell their names and families simply want to provide our 14,680 (at last count) baseball with some added knowledge and fun.
Sure he can be removed easily with us, if they wish. (You can add them individually. The subscription box is just below our logo on http://www.baseballtips.com home page).
Rule # 8-Good Practice teams well!
Every league is different. Some restrict practice times. Others have a limited field. Some coaches have limited time andgood. Have a plan!
Plan tomorrow's practice today. Plan next week, this week.
Planning is crucial. I do not think one should be more than 20 minutes! (OK, excluding BP - more on that later).
Something long & EVERYTHING!
If you keep a watch, you can get their blood flowing even more. More like "Ok guys, even 10 minutes, we're doing well. Pick up the pace ... Ok, 5 minutes ... go ahead ... you get the idea.
And it'snice!
Pumps blood, the children were addressed. Just be sure to tune in your player's age and skill level.
Something old, something new!
Learn something new every practice.
So important, review and practice a particular skill taught in a previous practice using one of your 20 minute segments.
quality repetitions are vital and incredibly important!
Too many coaches teach a skill and then the next season, the relearn once a year ... necessary or not! If youthink about how counter-productive, you'll never ... or do it again.
WEAPONS - FIREARMS - WEAPONS!
There are more mistakes to throw fielding errors!
Maybe not correct and is not my opinion ... It 's a fact!
Learn the proper throwing and working on the practice of arms.
Continuously or create a goal.
(The exception is when one of your pitchers are taught a new field.) You start throwing a, net curtain or fence. The reasoning is thataccuracy will not be great until a skill like a new step is learned. Accuracy will follow proper mechanics and you can avoid unnecessary shakes in confidence.
The last 10 minutes, the practice is just fun!
Preferably do something that requires players to use oxygen. Leave them with his tongue hanging out. I learned this many years later I started coaching.
Many baseball players that it is boring ... and that is why I leave the sport early. These children ... and childrenwant to run, play games, have competitions, races, hit balls, etc. ... Do you know Fun Stuff.
Well, boring boring if that's all there is a practice. But drills are really important, vital to the improvement and success of both the player and the team ... or not!
But let's not forget the funny and the main reason most children play. (E 'does not play ball, ball work, right?)
Be creative!
Here are some of my ideas. (Do not limit yourself to this, understand?)
RelaysMatches - ½ of the team to the plate and half on second base with hats backwards. A simple relay. Then 1 race backwards, then a final round for the marbles, running sideways (or heel to heel side-kicks like basketball teams do .... maybe you have a better change.)
Ball in the basket - Find a trash barrel from the bench or at the driving range and put the pot on its side. Take your team to a distance where most all players can throw to the targetat least on a bounce or two.
Now throw a ball high in the short where you can do when your Centerfielder launch the runner home. They ooh, aah and cheer on close throws (there are a lot of this). I have no idea why, but you really want ... Go figure it out!
Home Run Derby - Find a place where about half or more of the team can hit one over the fence and soft toss 3 per each player (soft toss, also known as flip drills, is our automated tip WheelerDealer machine does automatically. You can see our teaching page if you still know how to do this.) Having a second round, then a final. Perhaps the player who comes in second gets to go home after all races. Watch em 'cheer for each other.
Basketball Game - If a judge or a hoop nearby, simply produce a hidden basketball after dividing them into teams. Announce a 10-minute match. Watch em 'go. Totally unexpected ... and have fun
Water Balloon Toss - Picka hot day and have a supply of water balloons filled with baseball-size (make sure they are starting to balloon to be close). Partner them off in lines (like you do when running into his arms), but with players around 6 to 8 meters and a partner in a row with the balloon.
Use two hands!
Tribute to baseball players, you can catch every ball with two hands should be caught with two hands. They also show how the pinkie fingers of both handsshould be near and parallel to each other in parallel with their hands and to be kept below the waist.
Soft Hands
Explain that all infielders need soft hands. This begins when both arms (elbows not locked) and then rocked in the direction of the body as the private moments will come to you. water balloons require particular attention to the soft hands to avoid breaking.
READY ... GO!
The coaches command ...
Player throws underhand to his partner who catches and retainsthe balloon. His partner then throws back to his partner.
After 2-4 rounds, teams with a full balloon step 2 feet farther away.
Repeat.
Then 2 steps further apart!
Continue until you have a winner.
Once you have a winner, coaches make so much extra full balloons as there are coaches and the winning team will "blast the coaches." Yes, turn around coach ... and not to use precautions typical boys will be boys. (Now you tell me that 10 or 20 years from now thisplayers will not remind you of how much fun?)
It's not all baseball ... but it's all fun!
Thanks for reading.
Good luck this season.
Now go out and Have Some Fun!
